Scattering mean free path in continuous complex media: beyond the Helmholtz equation.
We present theoretical calculations of the ensemble-averaged (or effective or coherent) wave field propagating in a heterogeneous medium considered as one realization of a random process. In the literature, it is usually assumed that heterogeneity can be accounted for by a random scalar function of the space coordinates, termed the potential. Physically, this amounts to replacing the constant w...
متن کاملOptical diffusion of continuous-wave, pulsed, and density waves in scattering media and comparisons with radiative transfer.
We discuss several outstanding theoretical problems in optical diffusion in random media. Specifically, we discuss which of several diffusion theories most closely approximates exact solutions of the equation of transfer. We consider a plane wave impinging upon a plane-parallel slab of a random medium as a model problem to compare the diffusion theories with a numerical solution of the equation...
متن کاملAlgebraic Multilevel Preconditioner for the Helmholtz Equation in Heterogeneous Media
An algebraic multilevel (ML) preconditioner is presented for the Helmholtz equation in heterogeneous media. It is based on a multilevel incomplete LDLT factorization and preserves the inherent (complex) symmetry of the Helmholtz equation. The ML preconditioner incorporates two key components for efficiency and numerical stability: symmetric maximum weight matchings and an inverse-based pivoting...
متن کاملValidity conditions for the radiative transfer equation.
We compare the radiative transfer equation for media with constant refractive index with the radiative transfer equation for media with spatially varying refractive indices [J. Opt. A Pure App. Opt. 1, L1 (1999)] and obtain approximate conditions under which the former equation is accurate for modeling light propagation in scattering media with spatially varying refractive indices. These condit...
متن کاملA Flexible Solver of the Helmholtz Equation for Layered Media
A flexible solver for the Helmholtz equation is presented. The implementation of the solver is done in an object-oriented style, allowing for easy adaptation to different application problems. The solution methods that are employed are fast compared with standard solution techniques. The viability of the solver is demonstrated for realistic problems in underwater acoustics.
